You do not come from an EU or EEA country, Switzerland, the UK or a country with a social security agreement with Germany? In that case, before you can start your studies, your university requires confirmation of health insurance. Without this proof you cannot enrol. All students under contact and the age of 30 require public health insurance as a student.

More details

Ideally you should get in contact with us before travelling to Germany and we will help you arrange health insurance for your university enrolment. But don’t worry, we will also be able to help you after your arrival. We recommend that you watch this short video for an overview of how the German health insurance system works.

What do you have to pay and how?

As a compulsorily insured student, you pay a standard contribution. The amount you pay depends on whether and how many children you have. Further details on the contribution rate for student health insurance .

There are two ways you can pay your contributions:

  • To pay each month, complete the SEPA direct debit mandate (PDF, 728 kB) . Please note that you need a European bank account number (IBAN) from your bank to use this service. Please make sure you have enough money in your account each month to cover your contributions.
  • If you do not have a bank account with an IBAN, you have to pay for the entire semester in advance.

Exemptions:

If you have private health insurance, we need to check that it provides the same level of care as German statutory health insurance. If this is the case, you may be exempted from health insurance as a student. To do this, send us an   Application for exemption from statutory health insurance cover_e (PDF, 875 kB) within three months from the start of compulsory insurance.
